Download these 4 fun activities to use with your class! These can be used with one couple or a full class! Includes:
Baby Animals Name Game – A fun icebreaker for the beginning of a class or to help regather people after a break. This is the traditional baby shower game – matching animals to the official names of their babies. Everyone thinks this particular list is really challenging, but there are always a couple of people who get them all!
Birth Plan Game (Values Clarification) – This is an all-time favorite!! Print the sheets, laminate and cut. (You don’t have to laminate them, but they will definitely last longer.) Each person can have their own set of cards and then moms and partners can compare their results, or they can work on it together. Have them line up all of the cards that contain ideas they would like to have at their birth (in an ideal world, if they could choose whatever they want!), and discard any ideas they are not interested in or are not available at their birthing location. Then, explain that something has happened during this fake labor, some changes have to be made, and they need to move half of their cards to that discard pile. After they have all done this, if there are still a large number of cards left, have them remove half again. When they have finished, it will become clear what their priorities are for this birth. This may help guide them as they create their birth plans. (I have seen this game designed so that everyone ends up with only one card: “Healthy mom, healthy baby”. See this blog post if you are interested in why I don’t teach that phrase!)
Stages and Phases Card Game – This is an excellent review game to see how much your students remember! Print the cards the same way as the Birth Plan Card Game. I like to divide the class into two groups and have them “compete” against each other. Use the ALL CAPS Stages & Phases cards as headers, and have them line up the matching characteristics underneath each header.
Labor Scenario Cards – This application activity helps your student put their knowledge into real life scenarios. Each card has a real-life labor scenario and prompts them to identify which phase the mom is in, what action needs to be taken and what support she could benefit from. These can be done call and response, in groups or in pairs. They could also be part of a station!
These activities are also a part of the Educator Elite Bundle.
